Vision
To promote positive well-being and mental health of all children and ensure they are provided the opportunity to express and understand their emotions in a safe and respected environment.
Intent
During the children’s journey at Brushwood they will engage with an inclusive, spiral curriculum of learning year on year. They will address three key areas: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.
All children will have the opportunity to address key social, emotional, mental and physical areas within the curriculum, engaging in personal reflection and discussion. Brushwood children will specifically reflect upon their own mental health, gaining a better understanding of themselves and gaining positive coping strategies to deal with a range of issues. They will feel confident and prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
By the time they leave Brushwood, pupils will be fully prepared to live in the wider world as they will have considered key areas such as:
Implementation
The curriculum is set out to be a spiral curriculum where the children will review similar topics each year and they will gain a developed understanding about the key areas, mentioned above. This will allow for the children to embed their knowledge and be able to apply their understanding to various situations.
These topic areas could then be incorporated into the assembly theme each week, allowing children to broaden their understanding and application of knowledge.
Planning is informed by and aligned with the national curriculum. Consideration is given to how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion. Outcomes of work are regularly monitored to ensure that they reflect a sound understanding of the key identified knowledge.
